Though actress Leonor Varela portrayed history's most glamorous queen in the ABC miniseries Cleopatra, it took modeling the gowns on these pages to make her feel like a princess. "I never had all these fantasies growing up, but the truth is, as soon as I tried the dresses on, something happened inside of me. It's like a strain of DNA awakened," she says.
When Varela, 33, weds photographer Anthony Mandler, 32, this spring, she'll have ample opportunity to play the part. To accomodate family on 2 continents (Varela is Chilean), the pair hopes for a formal ceremony in South America and a casual beachside bash, perhaps near L.A., where the groom's relatives reside. "Two ceremonies mean 2 dresses," says the actress, who imagines the gow for the first celebration as "something constructed" and the second as "headed and satin, but a little bit bohemian."
One thing that won't vary is the style of the receptions. "If you have good music and good drinks," Varela says, "you are going to have a good party - and I love to dance." Indeed, these gowns not only brought out the Cinderella in Varela, they also get her on her feet. "I kept twirling around," she said. "I put on the first dress, and I began to feel the magic."
